Jim Spad’s Humor

A priest was riding to Downtown New York when a man smelling like a distillery dropped down onto the seat next to him.  His tie was askew, his collar was covered in lipstick, and there was an almost empty bottle sticking out of one of his torn coat pockets. He opened his newspaper and considered it for some minutes before he turned to the priest.

"Father, what causes arthritis?"

"Mister, it's caused by lichentious* living, drunkeness, wicked women, and contempt for your fellow man."

"Well, I'll be," said the man turning to his paper.

After some moments, the priest in a fit of remorse turned to the drunk and said, "I've been thinking about what I said.  It was a bit strong and I apologize. How long have you had arthritis?"

The drunk replied, "Oh I don't have arthritis Father, I was just reading here in the paper that the Pope does."

Sergeant at Arms

Richard Fox was not available today so Ric Flood took over, opening with the statement that he didn't have to talk fast because he wasn't an attorney. Today he levied fines on all those who hadn't introduced a prospective new member to the club in a year.

Fines

Ric Flood - Just back from a week in Florida with Larry Williams - had a wonderful time.

Tom Glaser - Happy Birthday on January 19th

George Schiavone - Happy that he is still a member

Rosalyn Graham - Happy to have had two weeks in Hawaii

Gary Marcotte - "$5.00 for five weeks of whatever."

Steve Dates - For his forthcoming visit to San Diego on Friday to complete his  District Governor training for a week.

Eric Hanley - Hasn't been here a for a few weeks and his kid's hockey season is in full swing.

Dennis Webster - For the resolution of the National Hockey League's lockout action and for the institution of rules to "protect the owners from the owners."  He was also happy that the Toronto Maple Leafs are currently undefeated (having played no games this season due to the lockout.)

Rob Bingel - Catchers and Pitchers drafts report is only weeks away.

Howard Seaver - Since the club has lost a number of members to death in the past year, why don't we invest in life support systems.

Terry Kennaugh - For a brilliant sunrise over the lake (actually over the Shelburne Bay arm of the lake)

George Ewins - Let's make sure that everyone we induct into the club is alive.

Alan Hathaway - What, the sun came up over the lake? (This before Terry admitted that the sunrise was over Shelburne Bay.)

Terrill Titus - For three days of grandchildren and having the opportunity to share Shelburne Farms with them.  She was also happy about the wide coverage given to the Make a Wish program called "Wishes in Flight." Wishes in Flight solicits unused miles for the foundation's program.  Anyone wishing to contribute should contact Terrill.

Jim Spadaccini - Birthday on Saturday.

There was a surfeit of guilt fines for not having introduced new members.

Carol Obuchowski -  drew the Ten of Hearts.  Rollover the $211.50 pot.

Connect Youth (CY) is a program in the Chittenden South School District. Its mission is to promote a culture that develops in our youth the power and conviction to make healthy choices. It has been around for 24 years and can be found in middle and high schools.

CY is a community-based organization which works cooperatively with the schools. CY functions within the school district but fund its own operations which calls for an unusual  organization. They facilitate programs for student assistance, peer leadership, and youth focus. The further develop health programs at both high and middle schools. Finally, but not lastly, they provide prevention education to parents, community, students, and faculty relative to smoking and other habit forming substances.

All the work is centered on forty developmental assets that children and youth need to have in order that they become fully functioning adults in a community. To learn more about the forty developmental assets for children/youth visit http://bit.ly/10Q7fM.

Recently, the CY Program has undertaken a mentoring program where they concentrate on youths 13-18 years old in the 5th through the 8th grades.  The youth are selected, not necessarily on the basis of their at risk behavior, but those who are most likely to respond positively to the program.  It averages about 130 students a year. CY has found that mentoring matters with 97% of youth in the program reporting that they are feeling better about themselves and that they are feeling "cared for." Meanwhile teachers report that mentored youth have better attitudes and show improvement in their school work.

Volunteers commit for a year where they spend one hour per week in the school with their 'mentees.'  The whole mentoring program is under the umbrella of the Mobius Foundation which is in the process of broadening its scope to include the entire state.

Persons who wish to donate time, talent, or treasure may contact CY at www.seewhy.info
