Today's guest speaker is Sergio Magalhaes, Ph.D, Professor in Cyber Security at Champlain College.

Dan reminded us this is Carrie’s last wednesday meeting to lead us.  Dan shared that Carrie did a fantastic job and we appreciate all the work she did on behalf of the CSH Rotary Club.

 

Trafton introduced the scholarship winners, Sophie Balldonlan and Zach Santos from CVU via Zoom.

 

Sophie plans to attend UVM as a Business major and Zach is attending Fairfield University as a Business major as well.  Sophie works at IGA Lantman’s in Hinesburg, volunteered at the CVU food shelf coordinating with the food shelf and Lantmans’. Zach volunteered at CVU with Creating Stronger Community,  Polar Express and clean up of baseball fields.  

 

Tomorrow is the club’s board meeting.

 

Denis introduced Sergio as our speaker today.  Sergio holds a Ph.D. from Minho University in Portugal.  Sergio is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Cybersecurity programs for  Champlain College.

He has published several white papers on topics ranging from cyber war, artificial intelligence, user authentication,etc. 

 

Biometric analysis involves “mapping” keystroke and pointer dynamics which he has also been working on for many years.  This technology is coming to fruition to be useful in our society.  

Cognitive biometrics involves the unique reaction your body undergoes when logging in to a computer, tying in with other biometric research.  

 

Champlain College Online is ahead of the curve for their program, serving students whereever they are in life.  Business and Technology degrees are available, as well as Masters.

 

Sergio made online security recommendations as requested by the club. 

  • Don’t engage with suspicious or unexpected contacts.
  • Don’t provide personal information over the phone.
  • Use sentences for passwords, not words. 
  • Double click on internet addresses to identify scam emails.
  • Don’t click on links in emails.
  • Don’t download attachments.
  • Verify before acting.

 

Jim Donovan presented Sergio with the book: The Code Book by Simon Singh, which will presented to Hinesburg Library in his name.
