Charlotte Shelburne Hinesburg Rotary via Zoom

Start of the meeting was delayed a bit due to technical issues.

Chris Davis reported that he has started to use the organizational charts Erik developed to create committees and assign chairs. Idea is to get all active members on a committee and get the committees working. Some have suggested we don’t be too rash about jumping in to meeting as a group so we should plan to do the changing of the guard either Friday June 26 with the incoming officers or simply Weds. July 1 during our regular meeting.

Start of the meeting was delayed a bit due to technical issues.

Chris Davis reported that he has started to use the organizational charts Erik developed to create committees and assign chairs. Some have suggested we don’t be too rash about jumping in to meeting as a group so we should plan to do the changing of the guard either Friday June 26 with the incoming officers or simply Weds. Discussion of a possible outdoor event for changing of the guard at various locations and service projects.

Halloween parade could happen in Shelburne with municipal approval. We would have to reevaluate how people congregate and how we serve food. Everyone is wearing masks anyway!! Rope things off, space things out. We will need more Rotarians and volunteers to help with crowd control. Richard does an initial brief in August with the police chief, and then we plan logistics. Richard has been inviting other Rotary clubs but has had zero participation. The clubs around us are check writing clubs not active “get things done” clubs. Erik thinks he knows some people in the Burlington club who may be interested in joining us.

Car raffle is happening October 16. We’ll start putting our heads together mid-July to start planning.

For fundraising efforts, we should avoid food related events. Bob Sanders will be meeting with John Dupee to talk about the golf ball drop and whether or not that event is possible. Roz noted that the golf ball drop typically occurs during Shelburne Day and we don’t know if that is happening.

David Mount joined our meeting to present a check to Hand to Honduras. Dave has been going to H2H Tela since 2008 and generally helps with building projects. Burlington Rotary Club has sent many members to Tela, as well as 15 of David’s family members. Part of the donation is going to Instituto de Palmbrio, which has a chemistry lab and a sink for accidents.

Linda Gilbert has put together a list of service projects we can and can’t do, like parking for events, pancake breakfast, pies for breakfast, water stations may be possible at races, hike for hunger, little pantry in the same vein that South Burlington does, watch Front Porch Forum for things towns need help with. Richard noted the Shelburne Community School does a winter clothing drive for kids who need jackets, hats, mittens, boots and gloves. He strongly urges the club to consider a drive to help the kids in our member towns. New items would be best but perhaps we could partner with Gadue’s or another drycleaner to have them cleaned. Running the drive to coincide with the Halloween parade may be a great way to get items. We could get a jump start now while people are home and bored and cleaning out their closets. Susan suggested we could store some things in her storage units. The PR committee could put together a press release. Drop off locations could include Adirondack Audiology and Richard’s law office.

Margo suggested Rotary could help with food delivery for CVSD kids who are food insecure, because many of the kids’ parents can’t pick up the food. Joan said she could check with the superintendent but school is ending and we don’t know what the situation will be in the fall.

The bike rack project will be a good grant project to work on for next year. Good visibility for Rotary and great service to the communities.

John Hammer reported that Chrystal Tonaki, the Rotary speech finalist and winner, has become a voice for the Black Lives Matter movement and spoke at the rally in Burlington. Diana will invite her back to speak to her about her experience with the movement and finding her voice through the Rotary speech contest.

Keith recommends Leave Only Footprints by Connor Knighton spent a year visiting every national park. Wonderful human story and gives the reader a vision into the park system.

Be well, stay safe and wash your hands!
