Carmone Austin was our first speaker,  owner of the Shelburne Country Store, which she purchased in June of 2022. Carmone grew up in Hinesburg and currently lives in South Burlington.  She grew up in a country store and always wanted to own one of her own.  Her first entrepreneurial venture was starting The Village Scoop in Colchester.

Carmone shared the history of the building and how it developed into its current physical layout.  She loves the environment of the store, meeting people from around the world, shipping around the world, seeing the children who come by for ice cream after school, raising money for “Make A Wish.”

Our second speaker was introduced by Carol Georges, Candace Shivers, co-founder of the Love Of Aging.  Candace is a fellow Rotarian and Paul Harris award winner.

Candace reinvented herself at 65 and discovered two types of seventy year olds, those living their best life (Camp A) and those slowing down claiming how old they were (Camp B).  She founded Love of Aging after conducting research and deciding to place herself in Camp A!

She shared fun facts:
  • Average age expectancy has expanded from three to one hundred days every year since the 1900’s.  Today it is 78.
  • Retirement - a new concept in modern history.  Too young to retire, too old to work.
  • Deflect and put off chronic disease to increase our life expectancy.  “Compression of morbidity”-we started focusing on prevention.

She also shared tips:
  • Have a healthy attitude toward aging and live seven years longer as well as keeping healthy blood pressure and cholesterol.
  • Unconscious mind must be positive to expand life expectancy.
  • Be engaged in your life and have a great attitude.
  • Have a purpose and a reason to get up in the morning.  A mission!

Dan presented the book “Better With Age” by Dr. Alan D. Castel which will be donated to one of our libraries in Candace’s name.
