Welcome

President Adam Bartsch opened the meeting by leading the Pledge and Kris Engstrom gave the devotional.

A special guest was introduced and welcomed: Maria Bortillo from Tela, Honduras, visiting as a guest of Megan Hanley. The girls met when Megan was volunteering with Hands to Honduras.

Sam Titus reported that tickets will be sold at Shelburne Supermarket on Aug. 4. With seven weeks to go, it is important that everyone concentrate on selling their allotted 20 tickets – and asking for more to sell.

John Dupee reported that 40 of the 3,000 tickets have been sold. The Club is counting on everyone to sell tickets and share any ideas for reaching our goal.

Projects

Camp Ta-Kum-Ta – Kris Engstrom reported that the preparation and serving of breakfast at Camp T-Kum-Ta was a beautiful, energizing project, one of the best things we do. “It feeds our souls,” she said.
Everyone who participated is asked to return their apron after cleaning it.

We received a request to pay for the food for the camp breakfast, something we have always done in the past according to Terrell Titus. It was suggested that since Sarah Rouse had asked that a $1,000 donation made to CSR by her employer in her name should be used for Camp Ta-Kum-Ta, that the food costs be covered by that donation. John Beal recommended that the balance of her donation also be given to Camp Ta-Kum-Ta. Treasurer Russ Blodgett said that would not be a problem for the budget and bookkeeping. Finance Chair Carol Obuchowski said the committee would be happy to recommend that distribution of the donation. Approved.

Harvest Festival Parking – Bill Root reminded the club that our annual day of volunteering to manage the parking at the Shelburne Farms Harvest Festival is approaching. Sign up sheets will be circulated.

Guest Speaker

Catherine Collins of Middlebury College shared an idea they have developed for fund raising, a concept they tested on the club and sought feedback on its efficacy. The idea was to turn “in kind” donations to the club into cash, but holding a quick and lively auction in which everyone who wished to participate dropped chips worth $5 into a bucket as it was passed around the auction circle. Anyone in the circle could drop out at any time, and the last one in won the item. Then everyone paid an amount equal to how many of their $5 chips were in the bucket.

Nine players participated in the auction for two bottles of wine, one Proseco and one Cabernet Sauvignon. The auction raised $810 for the club and Ric Flood won the wine.

Everyone who had participated (or not) completed a survey valuating the concept and discussed how they felt about the auction. The good news: regardless of whether we thought the “Pass the bucket speedy auction” concept was a good one, the proceeds of the experiment were donated to the club.
