Announcements

Williston Rotary Ski-Ride Challenge

Trafton Crandall announced that there is a team of four ready to take up the Williston Rotary Club’s 18th Annual Ride Ski Challenge to be held on March 8th at Bolton Valley. Members are himself, John Beal, Debbie Hanley, and Dennis Bowen. Funds raised go to Vermont Heating Assistance.

Shelburne Farms Maple Open House

There is still a requirement for parkers for the Shelburne Farms Maple Open House on March 23 & 24.  We’ll probably look for 3-4 parkers each day. Bill Root will be looking for parking help of between and soliciting names at a future meeting.

Charlotte Senior Center Volunteer Appreciation Dinner

John Hammer announced that it’s that time of year again.  The Charlotte Senior Center is holding its annual Volunteers Appreciation Dinner on Friday evening, April 12.  This year they will be serving, back by popular demand, the famous salmon dinner.  We will need 7-8 persons.  John will help coordinate and Linda Gilbert will be in charge for the evening as John will be away.  The Rotarians in the past have had more fun than the volunteers and it has proven to be a favorite service performed by the Club.  More closer to the time of the event.

Shelburne 250th Anniversary Year

This is Shelburne’s 250th Anniversary year. President Adam requested members to think of ways the Club can participate.  There will be a committee to come up with ideas.  Members were asked for ideas in advance. David Cranmer will coordinate with Colleen Haag.

CVU Community Service Fair

We have been asked to help man a table at the CVU Volunteers Day on April 16, 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Students will stop by to see where volunteer opportunities exist.  President Adam will be happy to talk to members who might want to attend.

Rotary Foundation Polio Plus

President Adam circulated a letter from Rotary International General Secretary John Hewko praising Rotary members for their yeomen work in helping to stamp out polio. The letter is the result of the plethora of large donations being made.  The worry has been that the late contributors would get all the publicity.  General Secretary Hewko assured Rotarians that Rotary would get high billing for being early into the campaign and having raised $1.2 billion and countless hours for the cause.

Hands to Honduras Dinner at Leunigs

Leunigs Restaurant is once again sponsoring a charitable opportunity for fine dining all day on this Sunday, March 10. Ten Percent of all their takings on Sunday will be donated to The Women’s Health Clinic (WHC) in Tela, Honduras. Leunigs offers this opportunity once per month to a deserving charity. Also available this day will be a raffle drawing for a Dinner for Two (proceeds go to the WHC) and the chance to buy a Community Partner Card.  This Partner Card costs $50 but allows you to deduct 20% off all meal (food) costs for a year.  One half of that will go to the WHC.  Details for this event are at: http://bit.ly/ZuPRsU

Jim Spad’s Humor A timid little man ventured into a biker bar in the Bronx and asked who owned the Doberman dog tied to a parking meter out front. A giant of a man wearing biker leather, rolls of fat coming out from beneath his jacket, turned slowly on his stool and looked down on the quivering little man and said, ”Why?”

The meek, little, milquetoast* of a man squeaked, “I believe my dog just killed it sir.”

“What,” cried the bruiser in disbelief, “What kinda dog do y’ have?”

The little man bleated out, “It’s a four-week-old puppy.”

“How could your little puppy kill my Doberman?” roared the biker.

“It appears he chocked on it sir.”

Sergeant at Arms

Rich was very sorry to say that he knew of nothing that had happened on this date. “Nothing at all.”  Therefore, no special fines.

Fines

Bob Sanders – For multiple absences

Ric Flood – Great weekend in Boston with Teena and Megan

Eric Hanley – For his 50th Birthday yesterday.  His family surprised him last weekend with a wonderful party with all his old friends. Played hockey the last two nights and now feels like he’s 75.

Chris Davis – For the great democracy we have in Town Meetings. Thanks to those Charlotte Rotarians who were there.

Joan Lennes – Happy to have Town Meeting week off and having friend Bob Corran here.

Roz Graham – For Bill’s wonderful contribution for making dinner Monday night at the Shelburne Town Meeting.

Linda Gilbert – Good trip in Florida.  She was impressed by the spinner sharks that leap up into the air and spin around.

David Cranmer – For his wife’s election to the Selectboard in Shelburne and now the sad realization that he has functionally lost a wife for the term of office.

Denny Bowen – Missed last week, but got six great days of cross-country skiing with his family.

Howard Seaver – The clocks are springing ahead next Saturday night.

Alan Hathaway – Daughter is getting married after which he is going to South Carolina.

Russ Blodgett – Though he is not a religious man, he notes that there are 40 days and forty nights until April 15th.

Michael Clapp – Has had to go buy a new belt as he has run out of tightening holes

Trafton Crandall – Ready to ski in the race.

Michael Clapp drew the Jack of Spades.  Rollover the $296.00 pot.

Speaker – Dr. Robert Corran, Director of Athletics at UVM.

Began by noting that his wife used to be a Rotarian in Duluth at the Number 13 Club – apparently named because it was the thirteenth club in Rotary.

He began with a few quick facts.

Image

From 1912 and 1963 not much building took place.  Since then there have been a number of disparate projects including the Gutterson Field House, the Multipurpose Facility, Moulton-Winter Field and the Livak Track and Field Complex.  Included were a number of renovations and expansions.

He went on to define the Problem

Image

From 2005 a series of studies were done which resulted in a slow reduction in the scope of facilities finally stopping with a 6,000 facility which was highly functional and not comprised of a lot of “brass and marble.”

What was determined to be the real scope of the problem is in the picture below.

Image

“We have some of the poorest facilities in all of Division I.” They went about patching things up with paint, graphics and signage, just to give the facilities an air of modernity. There was also a lot of repurposing spaces with some new materials such as indoor turf.

Part of the solution will be Phase II of Virtue Field as shown below.

Image

However, the big solution is a Multipurpose Event Center which will cost between $60 & 65 Million raised mostly from private sources.  It will be designed to be a:

Campus Anchor

·      Convocations/Graduations

·      Student Concerts and Ceremonies

·      Academic Programs

State and Community Resource

·      Community Events and Gatherings, Rallies

·      Ice Shows and Special Athletic Events

·      High School Championships and Events

Athletic Venue

·      Basketball and Hockey

·      Campus Recreation.

Located between the Redstone Campus and athletic existing buildings. It will be 18-22 months in building and probably be completed 3 years from the time the funds have been raised.

*  Definition: Milquetoast, n.  - The word milquetoast derives from the name of Caspar Milquetoast, a diffident character in H. T. Webster's comic strip The Timid Soul.
