Linda Gilbert read our morning devotional from the Dalai Lama.

From birth, we rely on others, particularly our mothers. From then, each individual’s existence entirely depends on a community, because we are a social animal. Community is the source of our happiness, so we must take care of the community. So now, in modern times, the concept of humanity is one community. East, west, north, south: everyone is interdependent. The modern economy has no national boundaries. Therefore, now we need a sense of oneness of all 7 billion human beings. In the past, may problems were created because of too much emphasis on our differences, such as nationalities and religions. Now, in modern times, that thinking is out of date. We should think about humanity, about the whole world.

Happy fines (it’s a new month! be sure to send yours in!!)

Denis: Just got back from Wellfleet and Cape Cod, swam in the ocean with a seal and there were shark sitings the next day.

Erik: It’s been really nice working from home and having the family at home, and working closely with his son on his summer activities. He started biking again after 15 years and his business is coming back to life and things are looking up.

Susan: After John’s talk last week, Susan’s husband bought some shrimp and they loved them. Super easy and really delicious. Susan’s been on furlough since March, and probably won’t be going back to work. She’ll probably go back to Africa next year. It’s been a gift to explore what’s next.

Charlie: His grandchildren have been here for 6-7 weeks without their parents. It’s been truly wonderful getting to know them. He and four other Rotarians cleaned out the pond on Saturday and it looks great.

Ric: Bucket list items- one of his has always been to play 100 rounds of golf. He played his 55th round on Saturday and expects he will be able to reach 100. Ric celebrated his 75th birthday in June, and realized it’s time to put more urgency to those bucket list items.

Carole: Visited with her two younger daughters and their children for her birthday. Blew out the candles and her daughter said “you don’t have COVID!” so this was a birthday to remember. She’s starting to think about her bucket list and think about things she wants to do when her work life is over.

John Pane: As they had dinner on Saturday night, he realized everything but the wine was local. Even the rice was local! www.vermontrice.net

Howard: He went to the dentist and it was like being in a space ship- everyone was covered in shields and the protocol was quite strict.

Trafton: He and half his family tested positive for COVID antibodies. He was asymptomatic but his wife was very sick. Second grandson was born April 2 at Mt. Sinai Hospital but that family is healthy.

Dan York: His job has been busier than ever but recently he has been locked in his own brain creating blog posts and podcasts and was able to get out for a run.

Susan, France, John Pane and Chris will be volunteering on Saturday August 8 at the Buccaneer’s football field at 7:15. Rotarians will be the “mask police.”

Susan has placed the order for the bike rack station.

Get speakers idea to Jessica.

Trafton needs to spend some money for the scholarship payments.  Chris thought the students might like to come and speak to our group after a few months to tell us what it’s like. One is going to medical school, and one is going the nursing school.

Alec Webb is our speaker next week. Jessica is continuing to work hard scheduling our speakers.

PR committee is making a clear delineation around before during and after events. Please think about all events going forward in terms of those buckets. Capture all elements of events including thank you’s from recipients for distribution with an eye toward recruiting members and letting the communities know about our work. Be Together in Service!

Membership committee is in the process of drafting a letter to the car raffle participants with a direct mail to explain why we aren’t holding the raffle this year, and add in a piece about all of our activities and make a plea for a contribution. We can do a ball raffle and offer a token prize.

Finance committee has had $5000 in the bank for discretionary donations. Foundation contributions are critical for the Rotary International global response to crises. Understanding what funds are available will be easier when the budget is completed. Bob has a skeleton budget to send out. Margo mentioned that the fundraisers this year will look very different, a budget will require a commitment from the Club to develop some creative fundraising efforts.

Service committee: Linda G. is keeping a calendar list of projects. She will send it to Bob for distribution. We have a solid service schedule set up. We should be keeping track of volunteer hours- quantifying the number of hours we donated- the school food distribution project is a great example with the tracking spreadsheet.

Final word from Susan Grimes:

There’s a time for everything

A time for joy and a time for pain

It is because of those times when you are fighting a battle,

That when peace comes, it is such a blessing.

A point of grace.
